All that skin…my review of some fave products

All that skin…my review of some fave products

In all the years I’ve spent traipsing and exploring the smorgasbord of skin care products and fix it’s, I’ve yet to find ONE single skincare line that does this perfectly across the board. It doesn’t matter if it’s Clarins or Lancome, Biore or Neutrogena, NONE can definitively say, bar none, that THEIR skincare line does it all. Those that do, are just flat-out lying to you; and that’s from someone who has learned from 20 years of deep exploration, that first of all, everyone’s skin is different and has its own kind of funky! So, D.E. A. L  W.I.T. H  IT!

I’m a skincare freak for a reason, nothing special; it was just the only way to survive and navigate the eruptions of puberty and later on, I learned to appreciate the benefits of becoming intimately acquainted with my skin and like any great relationship, we’ve come to a harmonious give and take relationship. Namely, me giving it what it needs to thrive and glow, and it, in turn, gave me the benefit of minimal breakouts, having a glowing complexion and yep, reaping the benefits of STILL getting carded when I’ve got a hankering to hang with my girls at the club! LMAO!

My first fave is my Kiehl’s Precision Lifting & Pore-tightening  Concentrate. My skin loves this stuff and it does show, lol…hmm I wonder if I could slather this stuff all over, ha ha! Anyway, while I don’t really see much done for pore size ( I don’t have issues with pore size) it does improve both the texture and radiance of my skin. One of the things I love about this line is that it does not upset my sensitive diva skin (think Mt.Vesuvius, in my teenage and early adult years, sheesh so glad I made it through!)

Another staple of mine is the rice powder face wash by Tatcha; I literally discovered this gem at my fave Sephora store and it was love at first wash, once  I demoed it in store! Can someone say, baby’s butt soft?! Oh Yeah 🙂

Now for the 3rd piece of the triad! While I love my Kiehl’s moisturizer, I’ve found that different seasons call for different types of moisturizer depending on what your skin’s crying out for at the time. I recently tried LUSH’s “Gorgeous” moisturizer and I’m going Hmmm, good! I haven’t fully committed to it yet (still sampling it out, lol) but just going by the feel and buoyancy of my skin I’m gonna say YEEEES! The only down side to this gem is that it’s a bit on the pricey side at $87.95 (sheesh, but again good stuff doesn’t come cheap either)…stay tuned for more on this adventure!

Why all the food talk?!

Why all the food talk?!

What the frack? It seems everywhere I turn, I’m surrounded by food IN ALL DIRECTIONS!
It’s on tv, in magazines, on just about every street corner and No! We’re NOT talking about
Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s; talking about junk food (ak.a slow poison) masquerading as “viable” nutritional sources-REALLY?!

Yeah I’m on a rant! It’s time WE all pulled our heads out of our collective behinds and realize that there is nothing “convenient” or “fast” (O B V I U O S L Y!) about these so called “restaurant chains” that package death and give you a toy to play with while your insides slowly putrefy from all the grease, left over toxins, and GMO ridden gunk THEY call food.

And WE’RE supposed to believe them when they say they’re “making” changes to use antibiotic-free meats and pesticide-free produce at their “eateries”? Did I mention that’ll kick in in like, maybe 5 years from now? AND in “phases”? Lao on that one! 😉 🙂

Oh let’s not forget, they’re “committed” to helping us eat healthier (a.ka. don’t die on us yet ’cause we need you to continue eating our crap because we need you to drive our profit!) Yeah, riiiight. All you have to do is look around you, at the people in the hospital (if you work in the medical field like me, you see the frightening results on a daily basis), family and friends to know THAT AIN’T WORKING!

So why do we keep looking for short cuts to healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle? I know it’s being done in other parts of the world? What I see is that it’s not all black and white, clear cut, or how ever you want to term it.
The ugly truth is that staggering numbers of people in the U.S. are literally STARVING to death, not so much from a lack of food, but a lack of HEALTHY food resources, especially in urban areas where these so called “convenient” restaurants have a monopoly; you’ll see McDonald’s before you see a farmer’s market Whole Foods, and so forth. Thanks to activists like Michael Moore, Robert Kenner (Food INC.), the non-GMO project and others, WE are finally getting it!

The Fast food industry and big agra-business ARE NOT concerned about our health, they’re only interested in ability to drive their profit and so it’s up to US to be our own advocates….time to get educated; our lives and the lives of our loved ones depend on it!

Quick, quick, ahh!…easy and healthy meals on the go!

Quick, quick, ahh!…easy and healthy meals on the go!

Hands up, if you work long hours!

Eating healthy on the quick IS NOT quick!!

Literally have NO clue where to start?

Alright, note to self, enough with the whining already! What did those Paleo chicks do back in the day? I mean come, surely they had a tad more challenges and inconveniences than we, modern Homo sapiens  sapiens, ever had?

My deepest sympathies to y’all 😉 In all actuality we all through out the ages have had to find ways to eat well enough and often enough to propagate the species; regardless of the tech. I also think we have a tendency to make things more complicated than necessary;  case in point is how our food makes it to our tables. Getting “educated” about “conventionally” grown produce and “factory” farming (i.e. large numbers of animals packed in cages, yuck, yuck, yuck!) was almost enough to turn me off food altogether.

There’s hope though 🙂 Thanks to sustainable and humane  ( organic and local food farming, co-ops, etc) cultivation practices, we can all breathe a sigh of relief knowing that WE don’t have to break the bank to gain access to pesticide free, sustainably grown, and humanely reared livestock FOOODS! YEAH!!!

image

After all that, cooking is easy! As I’ve mentioned before, I buy mostly organic foods and stay away from the “dirty dozen” ; those fruits and veggies that tend to get treated  with high amounts of pesticides,  and when I DO eat meat /poultry / fish I’m a little nutty about their origins! 🙂 😉

Soo I leave you with a quick healthy recipe starting with:

Your basic ingredients:-

1. Cup  of steamed organic brown rice& quinoa medley (available Sam’s Club, or other retailers)

2. 1/2 cup of organic mini bella mushrooms

3. 2 cups of shredded organic greens (psst! I got mine at traders Joe’s )

4. 1/2 cup of Sea food medley or other protein sources

5. 1 teaspoon of curry powder, 1/4 teaspoon of spices paprika and a pinch of sea salt to taste (you can also subst. 3 table spoons of stock instead)

6. 2 cloves of chopped garlic
image

Next, sautee your garlic in one tablespoon of cold pressed organic sunflower seed oil ( or any other oil that has a,high smoke point; I love coconut oil too! 🙂 ) with the dry ingredients and then toss in your brown rice-quinoa mix and veggies. Lightly sautee your seafood medley  separately (approx. 7mins ) and then toss everything together and Voila!  All done! Yep, it only took me 15mins and I was out the door with a healthy home cooked meal, Boomsies!

Next stop, the everything shake staring ALL THINGS SHAKEO, lol 😉 Also known as breakfast on the go, lunch on the go, guilt free frozen dessert smoothie, etc.. can someone say, FLEXIBLE!! Ha haha 🙂

Bye bye clown face; don’t hate!

Bye bye clown face; don’t hate!

Alright ladies, if you’re easily offended then THIS post isn’t for you. As a bonafide skincare freak, I’m here to tell you that rocky road looks and taste good as ice cream; as your skin? Not so much! Just saying, I know the truth hurts but there you have it.

In the words of my dear mamma, “what you eat is what you see” and “it doesn’t matter how much foundation you “spackle” on (lmao, mom was priceless), you can’t hide bad skin!”. In short, if you don’t take care of your skin (from the inside out), guess what? You end up with the rocky road ice cream effect, and as I ALREADY said, that ONLY looks tasty as ICE CREAM!!!
Just making sure you heard me, ha haha. But really, for some bad skin has become an issue of self-esteem,   heartache and literally a  frustration. I’ve been there too! Everyone has skin issues at some point (some both longer and more difficult to resolve than others), but the bottom line is, good skin requires a nutrient rich diet coupled with an excellent  (yes, that does include hygiene in case you’re wondering!) skincare regime (you those things like face wash, toner, moisturizer,  etc).

The “trick” is to find and optimize the one that works for YOU! Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) for me, I have “Diva” skin. Yep, you know, that skin that reacts to everything and anything unless it’s babied, lol!

When I was in my early teens and early 20’s this SOOO was NOT funny because my skin kept erupting like Mt Vesuvius anytime I put anything on it that it didn’t like! This from someone who had a skincare freak for a mom too, so it’s not like I didn’t healthy for the most part; it’s just that I didn’t now what my skin needed, what was “setting it off” and upping my skincare regime.

All that said, WHATEVER you do, don’t pack on the camo to cover up problem skin ’cause you ain’t fooling anyone about what’s underneath;  you’ve merely got the CLOWN FACE going, and THAT REALLY ain’t pretty!

Some of my miracle elixirs can be found at LUSH, Kiehl’s, Shiseido,  Clarins, and Tatcha. I know a bit pricey (in some cases) BUT I learned that most of the “cheap” stuff is a real killer and eruption bringer!!! Like I said, educate yourself about diet, nutrition,  and what works for YOUR skin type because we’re all different when it comes to our skincare needs…

While you were eating…

While you were eating…

Food, food, fooood! I love it; I love cooking AND I love EATING IT! So imagine my surprise when I FINALLY found a HEALTHY way of planning, cooking, eating, AND incorporating it into a healthy lifestyle  (exercise,  mind-body wellness, outdoor therapy, you get my drift?).

Who’d a thunk it? Right?!Riiight! OK here’s the skinny (no really, NOT trying to be funny here) just because YOU THINK you’re eating healthy, doesn’t mean you are…Say WHUT? Yep that’s right; what you EAT (nutrient density, quality, source, etc) is JUST as important as HOW

Healthy can be delicious!

What an eye opener for me, and it made me do some soul searching and to look for answers. Short and sweet?  I got serious about my health, quit wasting money and guilt on a gym membership that wasn’t getting used ( no accountability and support = failure, yep I found that out the hard way, lol), joined a fitness challenge group plus a REAL workout plan! The rest as they say, is history…This is my journey to REAL fitness, health, and life; getting fixated on balance in all areas of my life. just know there are so many other women out there suffering and being deluded that a gym membership is the ANSWER to their struggle,  NOT!….

Some how it moves me…

Some how it moves me…

Soo it’s late at night or early, early morning depending on what side of the day you’re on, AND I’ve decided to try a crazy challenge -yep it’s official, totally gone a little cray, cray, determined to not just hit my fitness goals BUT it’s my platform to meet some other challenges head on…

See here, I’ve got some real personal challenges  (i.e health related, etc), personal development  (no more looking for the approval of others, stuff like that, yeah it’s a sickness with us women, yada, yada), and the list goes on. One thing at a time right? Well for me this is where the rubber hits the road and I’VE GOT NO INTENTION OF GIVING UP OR GIVING IN! NO HALF MEASURES!

Phase 1, get stronger physically and mentally; yep I’m visualizing myself as Rouge  (yes I’m a trekkie/action comic book junkie/Sci fi chick, aaand your point would be?!…yeah, that’s what I thought!), ha haha. Anyway, she’s one of my avatars; strong yet vulnerable,  we women really do rock!

Anyway, as a coach for Beachbody I get to preview and try out tons of workout routines-yes it’s a smorgasbord of routines for just about any preference.  But I digress,  my crazy idea is to try 21DayFix and Hammer and Chisel (alternating days of course; I’m a little crazy but not that much, lol) for the next 30days!

Of course I’ll also be chugging my shakeology after my sessions so I can sustain and feed the new me! Seriously, who has time to pop multivitamins, phyto nutrients, etc on a crazy work schedule? I NEED to be healthy and give my body what it needs to be strong and healthy, so no COMPROMISE HERE!
Laters y’all!
Let’s see what happens…before and after pictures to follow 😉
Ok, here’s the before picture 🙂

Resurrection Sunday : like the Phoenix rising from the ashes…

Resurrection Sunday : like the Phoenix rising from the ashes…

Easter Sunday (and monday too) is a day of true healing, redemption and renewal, at least that’s what this special day means to me. Sometimes I look back on the last ten years of my life and I’m thinking “you should be so much further; accomplished so much more “.

image

The truth is, I have a lot to be thankful for; finally finishing one degree after so much family  tragedy, being on my way to finishing another, starting a business, WOW! Did I really do all that (God is faithful)?

Balance, balance, balance; life is ALL (or almost) balance! So now onto getting my thoughts and perspectives about life, achievement and progress IN BALANCE as I move forward in this spring season of renewal and rejuvenation, yeah, woot, woot, and all that, no sad faces y’all! I’m beginning to get it now; movement forward equals progress; just like the slow but sure progress of the tortoise, I’m getting  things DONE! Now on to paying it forward…
